OPPORTUNITIES FOR PROFESSIONAL GROWTH

Whether your path keeps you close to patients at the bedside or steers you to leadership, education or expansion of your skill set, we provide the collaboration, resources and support to guide and grow your career.

A VOICE IN PATIENT CARE

Our nurses have an autonomous voice, respect and influence to drive decision making. Unit Practice Councils and other committee participation empowers nurses to take an active role to directly impact the care of our patients and their families.

A FAMILY OF CAREGIVERS

Our staff are teammates, and our teams are families. All of us are united in the service of our patients and are bonded by our commitment to our community and to each other.

This is how we help our nurses thrive.

Autonomy at The bedside

We recognize the unique and incomparable relationship between nurses and patients. At St. Joseph’s Health, we trust nursing intuition and critical thinking to positively guide patient outcomes at the bedside.

Shared governance

Our governing structure relies on members of each department to offer input, innovation and initiatives to help us drive improvement and ensure our model of care provides a safe environment for patients and colleagues.

Mentorship and
Leadership Opportunities

Whether your goal is to connect with a mentor or to become one yourself, we work to facilitate leadership and mentorship opportunities within and across departments.

Cross training and
Educational development

We facilitate cross-training initiatives that help our team members broaden and enhance their knowledge base and skill sets. We also offer opportunities for our nurses to educate and be educated by their peers and leaders.

Unit Practice Councils

Within each unit, committees of nurses collaborate to improve and advance not only the care provided to their specific patients but also the experience of the nurses working there.

Access to Management

Our staff is empowered at every level to connect with their supervisor or leader to bring forward questions, concerns, or ideas about the level and process of care. We trust you, and we want to hear from you.

Four advantages to working in a
Magnet®-Designated hospital

The Magnet designation is more than just a nice logo on a website. Magnet health
care systems provide real benefit to their community, staff and patients.

1

Higher Level of Job Satisfaction

Nurses in Magnet-designated programs have been shown to have a higher level of job satisfaction than their non-Magnet counterparts. Many people believe that this is because Magnet hospitals have nurses at every level of leadership who are
empowered to make decisions that benefit nurses at every level.

2

Increased Options for Professional Development

Because Magnet hospitals are required to have nurses in positions of leadership, Magnet organizations are excellent places for nurses to grow their careers. Hospitals that promote nurses have better training, education and mentorship programs and have stronger paths to promotion for their nurses.

3

A Higher Level of Safety

Hospitals with a Magnet nursing team have been found to be safer than non-Magnet counterparts. Nurses who are given ownership and voice in their facilities are more likely to actively participate in keeping patients and other nurses safe in a way that benefits the hospital.

4

Lower Patient Mortality Rates

Patients at Magnet hospitals have higher survival rates than those at non-Magnet care facilities. The positive nursing environment improves patient care in real and salient ways!

Your questions: Answered

1. How do nurses participate in innovating patient care?

Our Unit Practice Councils are committees of nurses within a unit that collaborate on care strategies for their specialty. Our nurse, Sarah Chan, puts it best when she says that our specialized nurses are “essentially the inventors of care for…patients.”  And nurse Angela Dains adds her perspective on the inclusivity of our approach.

2. How does leadership work to support the bedside staff?

The short answer is, they often get right in there with you. Our leadership team is not only open to hearing ideas and concerns from nurses about how we can improve patient care – they also want to hear about when nurses are struggling and how they can help. Our nurse manager Chris Spinella talks more about how he helps his team by jumping into assignments with them. We really are all in this together.

Chris Spinella

3. Does management actually listen?

Yes. But don’t take our word for it. Take it from charge nurse Correy Brown who has been with us for 24 years.

Correy Brown

4. How do you care for the mental health of your employees?

We start by taking it seriously. We recognize that especially over the past few years, nurses have been under a particular amount of stress and we work to acknowledge that by encouraging rest periods and offering ways to destress and reset during the work day.

Chris Spinella

5. Are there options for expanding my career beyond the bedside?

Absolutely! There are an incredible amount of different pathways within the nursing profession, and St. Joseph’s Health will work with you to discover which one is right for you. Listen to our CNO Jamie discuss the many different options available.
